Train story
Created by Peter 7 months ago
I'm Peter, Arthur’s son. In the last couple of years, when Arthur was struggling with his health and couldn't do as much banding as he used to, I used to take him to the pub on a Tuesday night. Our favourite was Turk’s Head in Cooper street which coincidentally was on the corner of Morley Street where we lived until I was 5 ( 61 now) which always amused us both. I would take him to the pub and buy him a pint and then just let him tell me stories about his escapades in the Navy and with the band and with work and all other stuff stories that I'd never heard before as a son growing up and he used to just enjoy being in the pub with his son, burbling , and telling stories. So this is one of those stories.
So it's in the 50s Arthur is twenty-something, on good money and single and living in Parr and him and a couple of drinking buddies would on a Saturday night get the train out to Liverpool go to a dance, chat to a few girls generally have a good time. No matter what happened on the night they always had to get the last train home as taxis were too expensive, and they would always end up running with too many beers inside them, “Alf” would always fall asleep as soon as they got on the train and when they got to Shaw street Station , they would really struggle to wake him up to get off the train before it left. They got fed up with this and they came up with a plan to play a trick on him.
So the next Saturday night in Liverpool, they all had too many beers, they all run up the hill to Lime Street and just mak the last train home. Sure enough, Alf fell asleep as soon as he sat down. it comes to the station before Shaw Street, they all get up off the train and start to go out and then the lean back and start shouted “Alf, Alf, come on get off the train, it’s just leaving!!” So, they're all walking down the platform and Alf's just got up from his seat, and he's rubbing these eyes and shaking his head and wondering what's going on and stumbles off the train, and runs to catch them up. Just as he catches them up, they say“Now!” They turn around and run and get back on the train, just as it’s leaving, and rush to the window to wave at him as the train pulls away. Alf looks up at the name plate at the station and realizes that it's actually the station before Shaw Street and he's got a long walk to get to Shaw Street, before he can even start to walk back to Parr, and he’s been fooled by his mates.
I thought that was pretty funny and Arthur thought it was pretty funny even 70 years later, so I thought I'd share it with you.
